A Little About The Coombes Family...

The 'USA Coombes Family' represents the best of breed (pun intended) from the Coombes Family of England and the Chavez Family of Texas.  We have taken up residences in Americas Home Town where we live with our three boys.

This site is a resource to learn about our family as well as a tool for sharing information and pictures with friends and family.

Research of the Coombes Name:

Our Coombes family name came from my Father who's family grew up in the North of England in South Shields.  Several generations prior the Coombes name had the 'e' added from the original name of Coombs.

I can't be sure of the authenticity of the following information found on the internet or how it relates to 'my Coombes family'.  I plan on updating this section with more accurate information that is pertinent to 'my Coombes family' but for now it is interesting reading...

The Coombes family has descended through the lines of the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture. Their name comes from having lived in a small valley; the surname Coombes is often derived from the Old English word cumb, which means valley. In this case, it belongs to the class of topographic surnames, which were given to people who resided near physical features such as hills, streams, churches, or types of trees. Alternately, the surname Coombes may be derived from residence in one of the many places called Comb, Combe, or Coombe. In this case, it belongs to the large category of Anglo-Saxon habitation names, which are derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads.

Until quite recently, the English language has lacked a definite system of spelling rules. Consequently, Anglo-Saxon surnames are characterized by a multitude of spelling variations. Changes in Anglo-Saxon names were influenced by the evolution of the English language, as it incorporated elements of French, Latin, and other languages. Although Medieval scribes and church officials recorded names as they sounded, so it is common to find one person referred to by several different spellings of his surname, even the most literate people varied the spelling of their own names. Variations of the name Coombes include Coombes, Cumbey, Cumbie, Coomes, Combes, Comes, Cumbay, Cumby, Coomby, Coombey and many more.

First found in Sussex where they held a family seat from very ancient times.
